January 15, 2015: Question of the Day

What say you, Dear Readers? What makes an excellent school?

Diane Ravitch wrote...
New Hampshire teacher Shawna Coppola wonders how to define a good school. She explains why the school she teaches in is an excellent school that defies all the current reforms and educates all children to meet their needs, not to raise their scores. The school may be closed because of the cost of renovations; besides, it does not have the cachet of the districts with high scores. This crazy notion that beloved community public schools should be closed is recent in our history, dating only to No Child Left Behind. That now discredited law decreed that schools must be subject to a cascade of sanctions, including closure, if their test scores don’t move towards 100% proficiency in grades 3-8. Never before in our history were public schools closed except for shrinking enrollments or consolidation of facilities—but not for test scores. Many states have adopted A-F grading systems, but those are overly simplistic and they rely too much on standardized test scores. How should we judge a school?

November 4, 2013: Question of the Day

Many of you are already informed about education reform. How do we get more parents and more teachers informed and engaged?

Please give us your suggestions about how to get parents and teachers to push back against what our policy makers are doing to public education.

October 24, 2013: Question of the Day

Here are some questions to ponder on this chilly morning.
1. If the State Board can petition Long and Bosma to speed up the flawed A-F grading system, why can't they be asked to slow down the process?
2. Why didn't the Board object when Tony Bennett did not present the scores until Oct. 31st last year?
3. Since oversight is so important to the SBOE, why was there no oversight of Bennett's IDOE?
4. What does the term "Double Standard" mean?

April 23, 2013: Question of the Day

Did you know HB 1001 includes provision to FORGIVE all charter school start up loans including failed charters. The cost is 74.1 million.

What other for profit companies would get the state to forgive their start up costs? There is no provision of course to forgive any public school loans of any kind.

If they have 74.1 million to forgive charter loans, they can find more money for public schools.

February 2, 2013: Question of the Day

TODAY'S QUESTION: Education reformers have framed the debate so that words like poverty, assessments, achievement, evaluation, and other such spin words have controlled the debate. What additional words can you think of which have cast a negative light on public education and on teachers? How might we reframe the debate and put a positive spin on the subject?

January 4, 2013: Question of the Day

"What is on the minds of our students? We mostly have no idea. The Edupundits all seem to agree that the most important variable in student academic achievement is teacher quality. But isn’t the most important variable in student academic achievement really student academic work in the end?" -- Will Fitzhugh

TODAY'S QUESTION: How do we get students to care about learning and to engage actively in their education?

December 20, 2012: Question of the Day

A week ago politicians and media folks were saying that teachers are ignorant, lazy, and greedy. This week they are saying that teachers are heroes who need to be armed.

Here is the question of the day. Why in the world would they want to arm people that they consider ignorant and lazy?

What can we as educators, parents, grandparents, and concerned citizens do to push back against the legislators who refuse to acknowledge that we voted against these ill conceived reforms?

August 12, 2012: Question of the Day

Even though figures vary, between 20 and 50 billion dollars is spent per annum on failed educational strategies.

Do you realize that fifty billion dollars would help pay for almost half of the cost to repair the crumbling infrastructure of public schools (U.S. Department of Labor 1995)?

Fifty billion dollars would pay the salaries and benefits of an additional one million teachers.

Fifty billion dollars would furnish each student in American public schools with a laptop computer and unlimited Internet access.

Fifty billion dollars would provide every child in North America with three meals a day.

August 3, 2012: Question of the Day

How could the approximate $46 million spent on testing in Indiana be better spent?
If we divide $46 million by $50,000 per teacher, that could equal 920 additional teachers.
Since there are 152 school districts in Indiana, that could mean that there could be about 6 additional teachers per district who could be targeted towards early childhood education (or wherever the districts might need them).
